Okyehene speaks - "Act quickly to avert violent clashes "

Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Okyehene is warning of imminent violent chieftaincy clashes at Asamankese and has called for the police to act quickly to get things under control.

The town is enveloped in tension and the reports he is getting are that things can quickly explode into nasty clashes.

There is a bitter rivalry over the Asamankese stool between Barima Pobi Asomanin II and Osabarima Adu Darko III, as they are both claiming title to the stool.

The latest tensed situation has been caused by the seizure and occupation of the Asamankese palace by Barima Pobi Asomanin, a move which has been roundly condemned by the Okyehene, who sees this as an assault on the dignity and integrity of the Okyeman.

Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, in a statement on the current happenings, declared that Osabarima Adu Darko is the legitimate chief of Asamankese.

The issue of who is the legitimate chief, he noted, had already been resolved in favor of Osabarima Adu Darko.

He dismissed the purported installation of Barima Pobi Asomanin as the chief of Asamankese, saying, the said installation was not consistent with customary practice and it was illegitimate.

It was “unlawful, irregular, uncustomary and an aberration of Akyem Abuakwa custom and therefore null, void and of no effect”.

The statement added that the disagreement over who has title to the stool had already been resolved in favour of Osabarima Adu Darko III and that a customary fine was imposed on Barima Pobi Asomanin and that was why his raid, subsequent seizure and occupation of the palace was an affront to “the dignity of Okyeman, a desecration and violation of its cherished customs and traditions”.

Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin underlined the need for a thorough investigation of the incident by the police and to punish anybody found to have acted wrongly.

He said the current volatile situation required urgent intervention by the security agencies as he had received reports about possible spontaneous retaliatory actions to the provocation.

The Okyehene hinted of customary and disciplinary action against Barima Pobi Asomanin and other errant chiefs.
