Check Out What Akufo Addo Said In Parliament In 2000 When Rawlings Purchased A New Jet

The issue of the purchase of a new jet has become a matter of serious controversy in the country. many feel that like President Akufo-Addo told Ghanaians to tighten our belts because of Covid-19 matter, it would have been prudent for him to also hold on with such a purchase. It can be recalled that this whole brouhaha started when the MP for North Tongu, Okudzeto Ablakwa raised concerns about the cost of jets chartered by President Akufo-Addo.

On Alhaji and Alhaji, today, Saturday, October 2, 2021, Okudzeto Ablakwa brilliantly read out a Parliamentary Hansard of February 15th, 2000 (column 1653) where then Akufo-Addo, MP for Abuakwa and a ranking member on the Constitution and legal committee said. According to the report, President Akufo-Addo addressing the Speaker insisted that the country was bedeviled with a lot of problems and so it was not prudent for the country to get a new jet.

“Thank you very much Mr. Speaker for the opportunity to contribute to this debate. It is good to see that the Minister of Communication (John Mahama) and Finance (Kwame Peprah) are both here to listen to us on this matter. It is a time when there is a crying need for greater public investment in our health sector, at a time when students are crying, they are met with a cry that there is no money.

But the president is entitled to have spent for himself $19 million over the next 5 years for this aircraft. I have no doubt that if the priorities are spelt out properly, the purchase of an executive jet will come very low down the scale of priorities” Akufo-Addo said.

It’s been 21 years since this statement was made and now the same person who criticized a government, when there was no Covid-19, now is confidently asking for the purchase of a new jet. Many claim that it is not the president asking for a jet but rather his security apparatus. However, it as it may, the president still holds the executive order to approve or disapprove especially in times that the taxpayers are paying more though these are troubling times.
