Be bold and come forward - John Mahama challenges Dr Kwabena Duffour and others

Ghana’s next general election is a little over three years away but jostling for elective positions in the two largest parties – the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is not waiting – vigorous campaigning has started.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, has thrown the challenge to anybody who wants to contest him for the party’s 2024 presidential ticket to be bold and come forward.

Speaking at a meeting with party members in the Western Region, he said, nobody should be prevented from contesting for the flagbearer position.

This comes amid calls by some ministers of the government he led that the former President should not be contested.

One of them, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Odododiodoo Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has declared that Mr. Mahama is going to be the NDC’s presidential candidate in the 2024 general election.

He said anybody who would dare to pick up a form to contest the former president would poll not more than one percent of the votes of the delegates.

He is their best bet for the coming presidential and parliamentary elections.

Former President Mahama, confident that, getting the nod of the party to lead them to the election, is a done deal, told the party members that, everybody was welcomed to contest.

Theirs was a democratic party and that in any democratic contest, whoever would be elected would be supported by the party.

There is however, a constituency, within the NDC, who would want to see a new face emerge.

Some members and supporters of the party are rooting for former Finance Minister, who was also a former Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BOG), Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, to lead the NDC to Election 2024.

Dr. Duffuor has even been seen in a video that has gone viral asking Ghanaians to give their support to the NDC.

Former President Mahama’s refusal to accept the outcome of the last presidential election, is seen by many as a tactic, to get another shot at the Presidential ticket.

He appears to be on the campaign trail. He has already been to the Central Region.
