Sports betting has come to stay in Ghana as almost all Ghanaian youth are engaged in the act of betting as a means of earning money for their daily activities. Employment in this country for the youth has really become a thorn in the flesh although the youth makes majority of the population. Sports betting has served as a permanent employment for some Ghanaians and banning betting in the country will definitely add more fuel to the fire.
The government in it's 2021 Budget statement read by Honourable Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu made it clear of the intentions of the government to impose more taxes on sports betting in order to generate revenue for development in the wake of COVID-19.The 2021 Budget also read that an estimated annual revenue loss of over GHS 300 million due to leakages in the gaming industry and therefore the need to impose more taxes.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson reacting to the new tax imposed on betting says the government should be looking at banning sports betting rather than taxing it to make revenue which serves as a form endorsement by the government.
The legislator revealed that sports betting has brought about negative impact on Ghanaian youth and therefore the government should ban it outright. Ato Forson is of the view that governing a country is not all about mobilizing money but societal values should also be considered.
Some Ghanaians who are engaged in sports betting as a means of earning money upon hearing the comment made by the MP for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam says they will only stop betting if the government provides a good job alternative. Some are also saying that Parliament should rather be collapsed because nothing better comes from there.
