Media General Distances Itself From Comments Made By NDC Big Wig On New Day Show

One of the promises made by the ruling NPP prior to the 2020 elections was to roll out a Rent Assistance Policy to help reduce the pressure on young graduates who just got jobs after school. It’s been over a year and yet nothing has come out of the policy. Many have raised issues about whether it was a mere promise for the elections or the government will soon roll the policy.

George Ayisi, the PRO of NADMO noted that the policy is difficult to implement because it will end up creating a confrontation between landlords and government. He added that landlords taking only 6 months of rent as the law says is problematic. He also suggested that there aren’t sufficient funds to feed the Rent Control Department to enforce their laws.

Edem Agbana, The National Youth Organizer of the NDC however felt the explanation was ridiculous. He wondered why government says it has no money but conveniently gave tax exemptions of $24 million to Akufo-Addo’s in-law to build a hotel. According to Edem, this money was supposed to go elsewhere but found itself into the account of Akufo-Addo’s in-law.

Berla Mundi who felt uncertain about what Edem said asked for evidence but Edem insisted that he knows it is true. Berla then issued a disclaimer distancing herself and Media General from the allegations Edem made against the President. Edem didn’t end there. He explained that the Executive is using the Judiciary for their benefit. He cited instances where an institution goes to court against the government and the government uses the Judiciary to compel the institution to go back to work as in the UTAG case.

According to Edem these were signs of a government that isn’t ready to listen to her citizens. Once again Berla distanced herself from claims that the Judiciary has become a toll being used by the Executive.
