The Sagnarigu legislator, Alhassan Bashir Fuseini popularly known as Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini has cautioned the Appointment Committee of Parliament against passing the Minister-designate for Agriculture, Dr. Afriyie Akoto. According to him, the Minister-designate is unfit for public office, adding that the arrogance he displayed during his vetting, to issues about his performance in the same portfolio over the past term, should not be discounted in scoring him for the current appointment.
On Pan African Television’s political show; ‘Talk Time’, Mr. Fuseini remarked that the conduct of Dr. Afriyie Akoto to some critical issues regarding the Planting for Food and Jobs programme that was operationalized under his ministry in the past administration, was unacceptable as he “disrespected the member of parliament who quizzed him on that”
He mentioned that there were some ‘catastrophic failures’ that characterized the Planting for Food and Jobs Programme, and that some responses were needed of him to justify the outcome and not a “personal attack on the morality and integrity of the NDC MP who asked him”.
A.B.A Fuseini told the host, Kwesi Pratt Jnr that unlike the Minister-designate for Energy, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and Minister-designate for Communications and Digitization, Ursula Owusu and a few others who had the humility to admit their wrongs and apologize, Dr. Afriyie Akoto continued to remain ‘deviant’. He stressed that the only reward for him, would be that the Appointment Committee rejects his nomination for the position.
“Napo is spared because he exhibited some humility during his vetting by apologizing to the Prof Naana Opoku Agyemang. Even Ursula Owusu made the same utterances she retracted and apologized. But we also saw some who were very arrogant like the Minister for Agric. He was non repenting on some issues that were brought before him…catastrophic failures in the Planting for Food and Jobs which were pointed to him.
“You see him very arrogant and still saying that you don’t know what we were talking about. When somebody is asking you something on what he knows? So, I think on the basis of some of the questions there are some of them who certainly should not pass,” he reiterated.
Mr. Fuseini concluded that the vetting has thus far been impressive. He applauded the current parliament for being critical in their considerations of questions to the ministerial nominees this time round. He trusted that the best would be approved and the underserving ones rejected to guarantee the performance of the ministry and the development of the country.
