According to Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Information Minister, the payment of allowances to the presidential spouses date back to other governments.
He further stated that, Ghana introduce the payment of allowances under the administration of former president J.A. Kuffour between 2001 to 2008, but it wasn’t official then.
The reason for this allowance according to the government is because the current situation of some spouses of former heads of states of the country.
Although the first and second lady are not article 71 office holders, the can also earn salary as well.
