Census data could be used to create new constituencies -GSS admits

The Ghana Statistical Service(GSS), the service in charge of enumerating Ghanaians across the country has explained that details gathered at this year’s Population and Housing Census(PHC) could be used by the elections management body, Electoral Commission(EC) to create new Constituencies for the 2024 elections.

The service was quick to add that this is just an aspect of the exercise and not the main purpose of the exercise.

The service as part of data usage in the country, the details of the PHC can be used by the EC for preparations towards 2024.

Mr Owusu Kejah, the Head of Census Methodology at GSS made this admission speaking on Accra-based Neat FM reacting to claims by the main opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC’s) Member of Parliament for Banda Constituency in the Bono Region as well as the Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim that GSS is skewing the exercise to enable the New Patriotic Party to create some new Constituencies for the 2024 general elections.

According to him, the census data can be used to create new Constituencies across the entire but that is not the purpose for this year's exercise.

He explained that the rationale behind this year’s exercise was to know the number of people who are living in the country as well as the number of houses built in the country.

'This is done to inform policy and to affect policy to bring some reliefs to many Ghanaians, he said.

He took the opportunity to appeal to politicians not to politicize the exercise because it for the nation’s good to generate data that will inform policymaking.

Census data is used by every government for various purposes as part of the data usage regime of the country, he said

He said the data gathered today will expire in 2031 so, it will transcend the politics of who wins the next elections.

The data will still remain a document that must be worked with by all subsequent governments in the country.
