Johnny Hughes has sent out a bold message to law makers in the country. Two weeks ago, 3 MPs were referred to the Privileges Committee for their consistent absence from the House of Parliament. The MPs include Henry Quartey, Kennedy Agyapong and Adwoa Safo. According to Bagbin, the 3 have missed the 15-day absence window.
On Johnnies Bite today, Monday, April 11, 2022, Johnnie raised questions as to why MPs keep absenting themselves from the House when that is their job. According to Johnnie, these MPs go about and beg before elections and after winning they abandon their jobs. Johnnie cited lecturers as always going to work and yet they get no ex gratia, something MPs keep getting. He called on MPs who are fond of absenting themselves to repent.
In a rather interesting way, Johnnie called on all 275 MPs to go bath and go to Parliament. He noted that that was their job and not rather to go about receiving applauds from people. “Go and take your bath and go to work. Go and earn your salary. Building of schools is not your work. Your work is to be in Parliament and legislate. You begged the people for power and now you are running away”
Parliament is currently on break. They are due to take a 6-week break before resuming sitting in May. Issues regarding absenteeism have been a big issue. Parliamentarians have frequently neglected their seat and rather choose to come only when there are debates or voting to be done.
