The people of Asawaba number 1 are passionately appealing to the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, to as matter of urgency mobilize resources to construct a storm drain passing through the community. The residents are equally same appeal to the Member of Parliament for the Tamale South constituency, Haruna Iddrisu. According to the residents, the unconstructed storm drain has become nuisance causing floods in the community on annual basis. The drainage does not only get their homes flooded, but the residents say it is also a source of pungent smell owing to the fact that, some people have turn the gutter into a place of open defecation. Asawaba is a suburb of Tamale, the northern regional capital and located in the Tamale south constituency, where the minority leader in Ghana parliament is the MP. An elder and one of the first settlers of the community, Sulemana Abu said several appeals to the Tamale metropolitan assembly, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Member of Parliament of the area and other relevant stockholders to fix the problem has since proven futile. He noted that the residents continue to battle with the problem helplessly.
Another resident, Mahama Razak, who spoke to this portal lamented that, the Asawaba community has been neglected for far too long. “ We are tired of complaining about this problem everydsy, first look around you will see plastic materials everywhere, this gutter has become a place most residents come to engage in open defecation. We have talk about this many times but no help is coming our way. Please we need help”, he appealed.
The Asawaba storm drain has now become a center of open defecation as most households in the community lack places of convince. Ahead the rainy season, the people of Asawaba are appealing to their member of parliament, Haruna Iddirisu and the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to immediately dredges the Asawaba storm drain if resources cannot be mobilized to construct it.
