Free the prostitutes now

It is sad to hear of the arrest of 230 alleged prostitutes. These prostitutes were allegedly rounded up at Kwame Nkrumah Circle at dawn. The Ghana police service was in charge of these arrests.

The laws of Ghana as stipulated by the 1992 constitution frowns against the practice of prostitution and so it is very much right for the police to carry out such an operation. Many social media users especially the youth have been angered by this swoop by the police calling it insensitive and backward. Many believe that these young girls have found themselves as victims of society, left to the poverty of their fate and have decided to go into prostitution in an attempt to be able to fend for themselves. Others blame the government’s inability to create good jobs and good income for such people as the reason for their going into such illegal jobs.

It is unclear what the police will be doing with these 230 arrested young people as others claim they may all not be prostitutes or criminals. There is believe among residents that the police will not be willing to prosecute all of them. However many are calling for the immediate release of these ladies. One post on a Whatsapp platform reads “it is however sickening to know that in a country such as we find ourselves in at the moment the police prioritize for themselves the arrest of prostitutes.”
