Last week Ghanaians got to hear the financial situation of the country via the Message on the state of the nation presented by President Akufo-Addo and later the Budget which was read by Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu. The financial status was received with mixed. Today Parliament is set to debate the Budget for approval.
On Joy News’ ‘PM Express’, there was a breakdown of Ghana’s revenue and expenditure. Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson joined Evans Mensah. They debated on the economy of the country. At one point Kojo indicated that the cost of expenditure on Covid-19 was about GHS19.7 million. The host then asked him if Ghanaians will pay for that cost through taxes and he acknowledged.
Evans probed further and asked if the free water and electricity will also be paid for. “They were free then, but there are costs to be paid for. The country was in a war then so we had to provide and later get them to pay through taxes” Oppong Nkrumah said.
Evans was apparently confused and demanded why government had deceived Ghanaians that it was free when it wasn’t free and Kojo admitted that a situation had to be saved then. This got Cassiel Ato Forson laughing and saying that the Akufo-Addo government had been reckless in spending.
What do you think? Do you feel it was a political gimmick to win elections or as Hon. Oppong Nkrumah said, the country was at war then and had to find measures to win?
