The whole country was plunged into a state of mourning when the sad news of the passing away of former President John Jerry Rawlings was announced on November 12, 2020. The political history of the country cannot be complete without the name of the charismatic John Jerry Rawlings. One key achievement that John Jerry Rawlings is praised for is the founding of the Fourth Republic. The Fourth Republican Constitution, otherwise known as the 1992 Constitution, was founded under the leadership of former President John Jerry Rawlings in1992 after the Third Republic was distrusted by him.
But as today marks the one-year anniversary of John Jerry Rawlings, Mr. Akomea, a leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party and the Chief Executive Officer of the State Transport Corporation, has said he disagreed that the Fourth Republic was founded by John Jerry Rawlings. Speaking on Good Morning Ghana Show, today November 12, Nana Akomea said, he can only consider the former president as the first president of the Fourth Republic. He explained that John Jerry Rawlings cannot be said to have founded the Fourth Republic when he interrupted the Third Republic only to bring the country back to constitutional rule in 1992.
"This bit about President Rawlings being the founder of the Fourth Republic like my good brother here is telling us, I disagree. He is the first president of the Fourth Republic, that's fine, but to say he founded it, how did he found it?" He quizzed.
Meanwhile, Nana Akomea stressed that the biggest legacy of John Jerry Rawlings is the founding of the National Democratic Congress. He said that Ghanaians shall always be grateful to him for forming the National Democratic Congress. Nana Akomea was quick to add that, it is debatable that the former president lived my his "probity and accountability" mantra he claimed to stand for.
