Parliament today, Monday, August 2, 2021 resumed sitting. Today is one of the most anticipated days in the sitting of the House. The house will see the laying of a proposed bill by some MPs to criminalize some practices of LGBTQ. Many had pressured Sam George and this got mouths wagging as to whether Sam George will indeed be in the House today.
Sitting commenced with minutes of the last sitting being corrected. Then papers were laid before the house. One of the papers was to be prepared by the Minister of Education, Hon. Yaw Adutwum but it looked like he wasn’t present so the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah asked to present the paper on his behalf. Already an earlier paper which was to be presented by the Defense Minister was also presented by the Majority leader.
This got Haruna Iddrisu, the Minority leader questioning why this was happening. Haruna Iddrisu argued that the Minister of Education had deputies and so it was only appropriate that since he wasn’t around, then a deputy could have been in Parliament to present the paper on his behalf. Haruna Iddrisu added that though he had no issues with Osei Kyei Mensah doing the presentation, he felt that the House should have been accorded some honor by a deputy minister from the Ministry of Education doing the presentation.
This was countered by the Majority Leader who questioned if Haruna Iddrisu had a problem when others lay papers before Parliament on behalf of others. At that instance, Haruna Iddrisu retorted with Are you the one in charge” in relation to whether Osei Kyei Mensah worked at the Education Ministry.
This got Alban Bagbin intervening and quieting them. Alban explained that the 2 leaders can settle the matter privately without involving other members of Parliament. He charged them to do more consultations before coming into the house to debate.
