The Holy Scriptures talks about time and season for everything. Many Ghanaians are of the view that it is about time Parliament takes a critical look at our 1992 constitution and amend it to meet the challenges of the changing world. Some Parliamentarians, political analysts, and Ghanaians are of the view that certain enactment, standing orders, and powers given to the three-arm of government must be amended.
Some Ghanaians think that the power given to the President and some State institutions makes them too powerful. Because of that, they tend to manipulate the law anyhow they like leaving the ordinary Ghanaian to suffer for it. For instance, certain appointment role given to the President makes him too powerful. Some Ghanaians have suggested that it will serve in the best interest of the country that the Electoral Commission Chair be elected by either the citizens or the party executives of all political parties in the country.
This same suggestion has been made to leaders in our education sectors, law enforcement agencies, Supreme Court justices among other sensitive State institutions. The Council of State lead by its Chairman, Nana Otuo Siriboe II today call the leadership of the legislature and pledged their support to work closely with Parliament for the overall development of the country's democracy.
Speaking at the discussions, Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin gave his clear position on the issue of Constitutional review that it is about time the country takes a serious look at it. What the Speaker means is that he is ever ready to support the amendment of our constitution for the betterment of all Ghanaians.
Now it is left with other stakeholders like the legislature, executive, and judiciary to throw their support behind Hon. Alban Bagbin for this amendment to commence as quickly as possible. This when done can change some political ways of how we waste State resources in the name of my government is in power. It can also strengthen our democracy and fill every loophole in government.
