The Ghanaian constitution has made it clear that, each President has the opportunity to be in power for two terms supposing they are voted for.
Ghana has had several Presidents since independence. Some Presidents came through coup d'etat while others came to power through democratic means(elections).
In today's article, let us find out the five longest serving presidents in Ghana.
Jerry John Rawlings is the longest serving president in Ghana. He has been the President of Ghana for 20 years. He was the president of Ghana in 1979 and ruled for 112 days. He came back to power in 1981 and served for 11 years.
He was officially voted into power after the Ghanaian constitution was made in 1992 and served from 1993 to 2001.
He is the second longest serving president in Ghana. He was voted into power on 7th January, 2001 and ended his term on 7th January, 2009. He was president for 8 years.
#3. Ignatius Kutu Acheampong
He is popularly known as Acheampong. He was the president of Ghana from 13th January, 1972 to 5th July, 1978. He served for 6 years and 173 days.
#4. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah
Ghana's first president is the fourth longest serving President in Ghana. He was the president of Ghana from 1st July, 1960 to 24th February, 1966. He served for 5 years and 238 days. He lost his position as the president in a coup d'etat.
#5. Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo
He is the incumbent President of Ghana. He was elected into office on 7th January, 2017. He is currently the president of Ghana. However, he has served his first four years and he is in his second term. Putting all together, he has served as President for 4 years and 285 days as of 21st October, 2021
He is the fifth longest serving president in Ghana.
