The Minister for Interior has on the advice of the Upper East Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument reviewed the curfew hours on Bawku Municipality and its environs from 6:00pm to 6:00am effective Wednesday, 1st December, 2021.
Government is urging Chiefs, Opinion Leaders, Youth and People of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area.
Meanwhile there is a total ban on all persons in the Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapon.
The statement further stated that any person found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
The Ministry of the Interior on November 24, 2021, imposed a dusk to dawn curfew from 4:00pm to 6:00am on the Bawku Municipality and its environs in the Upper East Region following renewed chieftaincy disputes in the area.
A statement signed by the Interior Minister, Mr Ambrose Dery explained that the imposition of the curfew had been as a result of threat of insecurity in the area.
It had also placed total ban on all persons in the afore-mentioned communities and their environs from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons.
The statement further called on residents of the area to exercise restraint as well as to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace.
Meanwhile, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) had also banned the wearing of smock in the area with immediate effect, explaining that “This was necessitated by the fact that criminals or unscrupulous elements hide arms and ammunitions in smock and attack opponents or innocent civilians”.
