Late last month President Akufo-Addo through an executive instrument revoked the appointment of Adwoa Safo as Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection. The Minister had rejected so many offers from Parliament to explain her absence from the House. In the Privileges Committee’s’ report, they took into consideration 42 sittings all of which Adwoa Safo was absent.
Bagbin last month deferred judgement on the Dome-Kwabenya seat and later that night Akufo-Addo sacked the minister. All along, Sarah Adwoa Safo had been saying that she was busy with her family. she has mentioned in many interviews and social media handles that she was focusing on her family for now.
However, the revelations from a letter addressed to the Jubilee House from the law maker throws a different light. In the letter, the MP thanked President Akufo-Addo for the support he gave her. She noted that she has handed over all assets relating to the ministry to the administrator of the Ministry.
Interestingly, Adwoa Safo explained that the sack will afford her the opportunity to focus on her constituency and work hard to ensure that the NPP break the 8. This is kind of strange because all along Adwoa Safo wanted to focus on her family. Suddenly, the MP says she is now ready to focus on her responsibilities as an MP and assist her people.
Again the MP who has proved strong head to her party suddenly wants to join forces with the NPP to break the 8. Many doubt this promise of Adwoa claiming she wants to break the 8 with the NPP. Already, many big wigs are calling for a by election in Dome-Kwabenya. They argue that Adwoa Safo has wasted her chance and it is time the NPP present a new personality, who will probably be Mike Oquaye Jnr.
Experts say the Majority side of Parliament feel Adwoa Safo was the one who cost them the Speakership post. They fear in November Parliament will have to vote on the 2023 Budget and they will need someone they can trust to get it passed. It will be interesting to see what Bagbin will decide on when Parliament resumes.
