It Is Only In Ghana That Cost Of Presidential Travels Is A National Security Matter-Ablakwa Fumes

Questions surrounding the cost of Presidential travels remains unanswered after a question was filed in Parliament to that effect.

The last time the Finance Minister attempted to provide closure on the matter, he indicated that it was a national security matter and therefore the National Security Minister was in a better position to provide answers.

Honorable Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, member of Parliament for the North Tongu Constituency has expressed his frustration on how long the issue has dragged on since he asked the question in Parliament.

In Mr Ablakwa’s opinion, it is only in Ghana that the cost of Presidential travels is a matter of National Security.

He made this assertion during a panel discussion on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show with host Randy Abbey together with Nana Akomea, CEO of the State Transport Corporation.

” It is only in Ghana that the cost of Presidential travels is a matter of national security. I can sit here and give you the cost of the Presidential trips of Joe Biden with the “Airforce1”. It is public knowledge and every American knows that. Even if it is used for private purposes, there are ways to check if reimbursement has been made to the State Treasury” he said.

Mr Ablakwa further re-echoed his call for a national policy on Presidential travels to take away some discretions from the President to reduce the burden on the taxpayer.

In his opinion, the government is only employing theatrics to avoid answering or revealing the cost of the trips. In his estimation, the recent three trips by the President has cost the taxpayer 10.1 million Ghana cedis.

Meanwhile, the minority in Parliament has served notice to the effect that it would resist attempts by government to purchase a new Presidential jet because the current one is air worthy.
