Sekondi-Takoradi Metro gets new Mayor with massive endorsement

Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) on Friday confirmed the nomination of Mr Abdul-Mumin Issah as the Mayor of the Metropolis.

Mr Issah, affectionately called “Chief Moon” was confirmed by the Members of the Assembly with a one-time vote, garnering 52 votes out of the 52 total votes cast to become the next Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for the Assembly.

Following the sudden demise of the Mayor for the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, the late Anthony K.K. Sam, President Akufo-Addo in accordance with the Constitution and the Local Government Act nominated a businessman, Abdul-Mumin Issah to take over.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Issah pledged to effectively carry out the programmes and activities of the Assembly as well as that of the government.

He urged members of the Assembly to channel their energies into fighting all societal challenges that have become barriers to improving on the living standards of the people in the Metropolis.

Mr Issah also pledged to be fair to all members and called on them to be united so as to develop the Metropolis as a team.

He pointed out that his main focus in office would be to address the challenges affecting the Assembly which among others is to actualize the NPP Government's priority of creating jobs and opportunities for all, improvement of revenue mobilisation for development, tackling sanitation issues, dealing with security issues and other developmental issues that may require his attention.

He gave the assurance that he would continue with the works initiated by his predecessor and most significantly the reconstruction of the Takoradi market circle, construction of separate ultra-modern commercial and private central car parks and as well as ensure planned development in the Metropolis.

He expressed his displeasure about the attitude of many people in the metropolis towards environmental sanitation and urged the Assembly members to do more by improving upon the sanitary conditions in the metropolis.

Mr Issah said he would not relent in pursuing this goal to ensure that the Metropolis attained the status of being one of the cleanest cities in the country.

He said the indiscipline being exhibited by commercial drivers who have turned almost every intersection and available space into loading terminals with impunity to the detriment of other road users, and traders, especially hawkers who continue to disregard the Assembly's bye - laws, by selling on pavements, walkways and other locations meant for trading activities would not be tolerated.

The Western Regional Minister Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko -Mensah, said the NPP Government was committed to the development of the Region and that the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis was about to get its fair share of the national cake.

He announced that President Nana Akufo-Addo would next week cut the sod for the construction of the Railway University and Takoradi Market Circle.

Mr Mumin who hails from Huntimano in the Ahanta West Municipality, had his basic education at Howard school in Takoradi and his secondary education at the St Mary's Boys Secondary School also in Takoradi.

In 1984 he pursued a maritime course in Cyprus and returned to join the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 1995, becoming one of the financiers of the Party in the Region.

He became the Takoradi Constituency Chairman from 2000 to 2008 and later contested for the Regional Chairmanship position of the Party in 2018 but lost.

Mr Mumin is a Muslim and together with his Christian wife have three boys and a girl. He currently owns a cleaning services company.
