The biggest opposition party at the moment, National Democratic Congress through its youth wing in a statement has noted that they will challenge the approval of salaries for Mrs Rebbeca Akufo-Addo and Mrs Samira Bawumia at the Apex court of the country. His Excellency the president build up a committee to make recommendation to Parliament and to him about salaries and allowances that is payable to the wife of the President and that of his vice.
Following this, the youth wing of the NDC has released a statement noting that they do not support the idea of approving salaries and allowances for presidential spouses in the country. According to them, the fundamental laws of the land do not give power to the Emolument Committee to choose category of persons that should benefit from the consolidated fund.
"It is surprising that at a time, president Akufo-Addo has admitted all Ghanaians to make sacrifices and has impose nuisance taxes coupled with draconian economic policies under the guise of economic recovery due to COVID-19, he gave clean bill of health for Parliament to approve a report of a Committee he constituted to impose further financial burden on the consolidated fund". This was captured in a statement released by the party's youth wing.
They added that if there's any salary negotiation, it should be the salary of the youth. They added further that they will challenge this decision by the government in the Supreme Court.
What's your thoughts on this, do you think the presidential spouses deserve to be paid, what service do they even provide to the Nation? Drop your thoughts in the commentary box below and follow up for more updates.
