Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, one of the founding members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his opinion that John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the former Minister for Trade and Industry, is not suitable to lead the party as its flagbearer.
According to Dr. Tamakloe, although he personally had considered Kyerematen as a potential flagbearer for the 2024 presidential election, the former minister's failure to take appropriate action and distance himself from the Akufo-Addo government on matters of impropriety disqualifies him as a viable option.
"While I would have personally chosen Alan Kyerematen, it is important to understand that he should have taken the necessary action earlier, which he failed to do, and in my view, this disqualifies him," explained Dr. Tamakloe.
He went on to elaborate, saying, "Alan Kyerematen has been a longstanding member of our party. He was among the young individuals who followed us. He listened to advice and stepped aside for Akufo-Addo. However, as a minister, he was witness to numerous infractions occurring within the government. It is hard for me to believe that he was unaware because he held a cabinet position. Unless they all just sat there and listened to Akufo-Addo without question, Alan Kyerematen should have had the courage to speak up against what was wrong. If the government disagreed with him, he should have taken the initiative to resign. Therefore, I believe he lacks the willingness to resign, and it is this quality that can bring us a good leader."
In January 2023, Alan Kyerematen announced his resignation from the Akufo-Addo-led government, citing his intention to run as a flagbearer hopeful for the NPP. However, critics of the former minister argue that he left for the wrong reasons and should have resigned earlier, considering the government's role in the country's current economic challenges and various scandals during its administration.
