Office of the Speaker has released a statement.

Following the recent brouhaha concerning the 2022 budget rejection and the Speaker’s recent travel abroad, the Office of the Speaker of Parliament, in a latest release has said, that the Majority NPP caucus and Minority NDC caucus in parliament, may disagree on issues on the floor but these are all based on procedures, which governs the work of the House, and which are strictly adhered to without fear or favour.

According to the Speaker’s Office, is not happy about the ongoing reports regarding Speaker Alban Bagbin’s reason for travelling abroad for medical care, instead of doing it here in Ghana.

In the release, issued on Monday, November 29, by Magnus Kofi Amoatey (counsel for the Speaker), it is said “The current Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, being mindful of the times in which the country finds itself, traveled with a comparatively skeletal staff, taking into consideration the economic situation in the country and bearing in mind, the need for frugal and prudent spending”.

The release further explained that, the Speaker’s recent trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is for a routine medical check-up, and that it is part of his conditions of service. It also said that, is not good to politicize the Speaker’s health issues.

According to the statement, there are records to show that all past Speakers of Parliament in the Fourth Republic, also embarked on similar health trips and even the entire leadership of the House are entitled to same. It added That, “The office will advise that the health issues of the speaker and that of other office bearers are not politicized as anybody could be taken ill at any time”.

The Office of Speaker in the statement, again wishes to assure Ghanaians, that Parliament is committed to seeking the best interest of the people they represent, and will continue to do so by its commitments to protect the public purse at all times.

On Saturday, 27 November 2021, Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, went for medical review in Dubai (United Arab Emirate), a day after 2022 budget was rejected, in parliament by the Minority NDC caucus.
