E-Levy Returns To Parliament Today, Check Out The Reactions Of Both The Majority And Minority

Parliament returns today, Tuesday, January 25, 2022. The 8th Parliament has been a feisty one with the Majority headed by Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu and Haruna Iddrisu led Minority clashing on a number of issues. The first session of the 8th Parliament started with disorder and ended with complete chaos last year December. The matter of contention regarded the E-levy

The Minority have opposed the E-levy because they argue it is not in the interest of Ghanaians and will impoverish the ordinary Ghanaian. The government however insists that the E-levy, which will tax all mobile money transaction, will help create jobs and build roads and other amenities. As Parliament resumes today, the Majority Leader has noted that the E-levy has been passed in advance.

According to Osei Kyei Mensah, all is set and the both sides of the House have agreed by consensus to approve the E-levy. He cited the passing of the Appropriation Bill as a foreshadow of what will happen when Parliament resumes. He assured Ghanaians that the levy will be for their own good.

Yesterday, on PM Express, the Deputy Minority Whip, Ibrahim Ahmed explained that since Parliament went on recess, there has been no consensus between the NDC and NPP. He said that the recess has turned out to be a witch hunting of NDC MPs. He noted that the NDC are ready to come to the table but the government have resisted such calls.

The NDC Whip was of the view that if the government wanted a discussion they would have done that, but rather they want to force their way through. He added that so far nothing has been agreed on and so rumors of a consensus are just to deceive the public. All eyes will be on Parliament in the next few days. Will there be consensus or more drama?
