“You are writing leave, leave as if that is simple for a victim of abuse”- Afia Pokuah disagrees.

Many feminist activists in Ghana have expressed their opinion concerning domestic violence against women in marriages. They have cautioned women to leave their husbands when they see any trait of abusiveness in their marriage.

However, the controversial journalist and head of programs at Despite Media Group, Afia Pokuah, has vehemently disagreed with the stance taken by some feminist activists in the country.

According to her, leaving a matrimonial home because of domestic violence is not as easy as they say or write about.

This is because some victims of domestic violence find it difficult to get basic necessities like shelter, job, money, and medical assistant after enduring unbearable pains at the hands of their spouses.

Afia Pokuah proposed that government should provide supportive scheme for victims of domestic violence in order to cater for their basic necessities, empower them economically and psychologically.

Moreover, she urged government to support DOVVSU and other anti domestic violence institutions for them to perform their duty diligently and effectively.

She wrote that

“You are writing "leave", "leave" as if that is simple for a victim of abuse

The reality is, that will ONLY be easy if, support systems are there for the abused person, a state provided shelter is available, economic means (money or work) is available to the victim to survive after leaving, psychological support to heal the victim.”
