Election victory was stolen from us by soldiers - John Mahama claims

Former President John Dramani Mahama says soldiers were used to steal election victory from him and his party in the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

He claimed that they were cruising to victory until, well-armed soldiers, were rushed to the collation centres.

The intimidating presence of the soldiers, put fear in the electoral officers, forcing them to call the election for the NPP. He declared that the general election conducted by the Jean Mensa-led election management board – the Electoral Commission (EC) lacked transparency, fairness and credibility.

Former President Mahama was speaking to a local radio station in the Volta Region, where he is now on what has been termed “a thank you tour”. He has been taking pot shots at the Electoral Commission and making wild unsubstantiated claims that the presidential and parliamentary elections were rigged – stolen.

The former President, who led his opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the 2020 election, filed a petition with the Supreme Court, asking for the court to order a re-run of the presidential election, with himself and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as the only candidates. After hearing the petition by the country’s Apex Court, presided over by the Chief Justice, the unanimous ruling was that the petition lacked substance.

Former President Mahama is yet to provide evidence to back his election rigging allegation.

In his interview with the radio station, he said he was upbeat about his party’s chances of winning the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. He accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of power drunkenness. He said power had eaten into their heads and that was why they had been talking about handing over power to themselves.

The former President is continuing to tighten his grip on the NDC, to give him another shot at the Presidency.

There is a play out - re-enactment of the political script that preceded the party’s last presidential primary election – hitting the campaign trail under the pretext of going on a nationwide thank you tour.

A smart politician - he is not giving anything to chance as rumors swill that other party heavyweights including Dr. Kwabena Duffour, a former Finance Minister, who also served as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, are lacing their boots to join the race for the NDC’s 2024 presidential ticket.

Volta Region is the home region of the party’s founder, the late President Jerry John Rawlings. The region has been loyal to the NDC and remains the party’s stronghold.
