The latest news coming from the House of Parliament reveals that, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Honorable Alban Bagbin; after passing the controversial E-levy, and putting the entire nation into a state of 'heated' debates, has shown his powers again.
According to the information, the Speaker has referred three MPs, who are members of the ruling New Patriotic Party Caucus in Parliament, to the Privileges Committee of Parliament, for their continues absence from Parliament without permission.
The three MPs (Honorable Sarah Adwoa Safo, Honorable Henry Quartey, and Honorable Kennedy Agyapong), were referred to the Privileges Committee of Parliament, for absenting themselves from over fifteen sittings of the House.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Speaker Alban Bagbin said the continues absence of the Members of Parliament without his permission, constitutes a breach of the rules of Parliament.
Addressing absenteeism in the House on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, Speaker Alban Bagbin said, the Dome-Kwabenya MP-Sarah Adwoa Safo; the Ayawaso Central MP-Henry Quartey, Ahanta West MP-Ebenezer Kojo Kum, and the Assin Central MP-Kennedy Agyapong, had flouted provisions of Article 97(1)(c) of the Constitution and Parliament’s Standing Order 16(1), which frowns on Members absenting themselves for 15 sitting days without permission from the speaker.
The Speaker added that, "Per Article 97(1)(c) of the 1992 Constitution, a Member of Parliament shall vacate his seat, if he is absent, without the permission in writing of the Speaker, and he is unable to offer a reasonable explanation to the Parliamentary Committee on Privileges, from fifteen sittings of a meeting of Parliament, during any period that Parliament has been summoned to meet and continues to meet”.
He also urged urged the Privileges committee to provide its report to the house, two weeks after the House reconvenes from recess.
