Very soon, the Akufo-Addo led New Patriotic Party (NPP) will be having their delegates conference to choose who succeeds Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo as the party's flagbearer for the 2024 general elections. The governing ruling party will have to elect a completely new candidate to lead them into the 2024 general elections.
Among the notable people who are likely to lead the elephant family into the 2024 general elections include people like the current vice president of Ghana, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the current Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Alan Kwadwo Kyeremateng.
We have therefore decided to find out what is likely to happen to the NPP going into the 2024 general elections, and the fate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. We discovered that some factors are going to impede the vice president from becoming the NPP's flagbearer in 2024.
1. Bawumia is a first time contender:The upcoming delegates conference is going to be the first time Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would be contesting for such a sensitive position in his political career. In the history of Ghana and the NPP, it does not usually happen that a first time contender emerges the winner in such contests.
2. Years Of Doing Politics: The number of years Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been in active partisan politics is also too short to be considered for such position. He was introduced to active politics in 2008 when Nana Akufo-Addo chose him to he his running mate for the presidential elections. It is notable at this point that the NPP is one party that rewards long service and loyalty in such circumstances.
3. The Alan Kyeremateng factor: This is also going to be a huge obstacle in the political fortunes of Dr. Bawumia, going into 2024. It is a fact that Alan Kyeremateng has been contesting for the position since 2008, and he is still likely to contest again in 2024. Having built a certain niche for himself, his presence is a great source of worry to the prospective supporters of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
