The President of the land, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on today, Monday, 28th June 2021, meet the Executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) at the Jubilee House. This meeting captured the GJA President, Mr. Roland Affail Monney, the renowned journalist of Peace FM, Kwame Sefa Kayi, the Information Minister, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah among others at the Jubilee House.
The purpose of this meeting was to discuss a stimulus package for the media. This is President Akufo-Addo's intervention to assist the media to rise to the occasion after the negative effect of Covid-19. There was also a discussion on the construction of a new building to serve as the new Ghana International Press Centre.
The members talk about the recent attacks on journalists. As many Ghanaians can remember, Caleb Kudah of Citi TV was beaten, maltreated, and handcuffed like a criminal by the National Security Operatives. Zoe Baidoo was also maltreated. The GJA also requested the Office of the President to take up the donation of VW cars to the four (4) previous winners of Journalists of the Year, which are pending.
The government has already presented a VW vehicle to the current Journalist of the Year, Samson Lardi Ayenini. These discussions made some Ghanaians to react that, what the GJA is doing is creating a conflict of interest for the government to decide who should win what that GJA Awards. They stressed that every favor or donation from the government has some string attached.
Check out some reactions from some Ghanaians below:
A Facebook user known as Ato Kwamina Aikins said that "D3333 how? GJA awards coming from the president? How can you bite the fingers that feed you? I now understand the behavior of the media now".
Another Facebook user known as Bernard Dzekoi reacted that "Hmmm, when u gets to the Flagstaff house and u are promised and given a token, instead to seek the interest of the majority, nothing happens again. Hmmm God saves us".
Richard Justice Ayamba added that "Instead of you people telling the man the truth that journalists are being oppressed, you will be there laughing with him".
