The recommendation by the Emoluments Committee to place the wives of President Akuffo-Addo and Vice-president Mahamudu Bawumia has received backlash from Ghanaians. The debate on Presidential Spouses salaries have divided the country into two groups.
Since independence we have paid this allowance to First and Second Spouses in this country. The Presidential Spouses are busier and much impactful in areas such as health, environment etc. So they are supposed to be compensated and this is not something new.
However, the emoluments committee proposal is even illegal and inconsistent with the 1992 constitution. The committee has no authority to recommend payment of any allowance to First and Second Ladies.
Head of programs at Despite's media, Afia Pokuaa popularly known as Vim Lady has broken silence on this trending issue, saying they can amend the Constitution and remove the entire Article 71 benefits and all whatever ladies allowance and use that money to build schools under trees. Meanwhile, end of services benefits for ordinary workers was removed from the law in 1991.
She made this assertions in her Facebook page reacting to huge money they have decided to give to first and second ladies in the country
