Readers will recall that former President of Guinea Prof. Alpha Conde was removed from office during a bloodless coup d'etat on 5th September 2021. The millitary junta that overthrew the 83 year old president accused him of massive corruption among government officials and poor living conditions among the ordinary citizens.
The president who had completed two terms as permitted by the constitution won a 3rd term presidency last October after amending the constitution to accommodate same. Many condemned this act and attributed the recent coup to it. But the president of Ghana who doubles as ECOWAS chairman was yet to comment on it. His initial concerns were the safety and rights of the captured former President.
The opportunity presented itself today for the president to make official statement on the decision of Alpha Conde to run a 3rd term. A question was posed to him to that effect by Oderfour Qwasi Kay, a Kumasi based journalist on Ashh FM monitored by CitizenOne.
In his response, the president defended Alpha Conde for taking that decision. According to him, Alpha Conde knew very well from the beginning that he couldn't run for a 3rd term without constitutional amendment. He said a referendum was conducted in Guinea and majority of the citizens voted to amend that part of the constitution to allow one to run beyond two terms. He concluded that what Alpha Conde did wasn't illegal although some people may have their reservation. He said Guinea is a sovereign nation and couldn't be dictated for by any other.
President Akuffo Addo condemed the millitary take over and repeated his calls on the new Guinean government to unconditionally release President Conde. He cautioned that, ECOWAS will hold the Mamady government accountable should anything untoward happens to Alpha Conde.
Nana Addo assured people in the Ashanti region that his government will work hard to complete the Boankra Inland Port which was started by former President Kuffour.
Yesterday, Nana Akuffo Addo visited His Majesty Otumfour Osei Tutu II as part of his three day tour of the garden city. He told the occupant of the golden stool that his government had constructed more roads in the region than any other government in the 4th republic. But Otumfour disagreed with him. The wise king told him to always endeavour to go to the grounds to see what was happening instead of waiting in Accra to briefed. He said most of the reports that come to him at the seat of government are false.
TV3's Evans Nkum has reported that the president is scheduled to commission only one project in the region in his three day tour. Apart from the Bekwai Government hospital which is scheduled for commissioning, all other projects are billed for inspection by the president.
