The internal wrangling within the NDC is seeing no end soon. The party has battled with so many issues after they lost the 2020 elections to the ruling New Patriotic Party under President Akufo-Addo. Many issues have been attributed to the loss. The issues of contention have even showed up among the NDC caucus in Parliament and many feel this is not a good sign.
Over the weekend the NDC party leadership met in the Volta region to review their performance and plan ahead. Elsewhere in Tema a section of the party many believe to be the Rawlings faction also met to look at the actions that caused the defeat of the party. The group is asking the party leadership to explain the loss. In an interview with Joy FM, Dr. Ben Kumbour explained that they are holding the party leadership to account for their stewardship.
Many feel this is a clear threat to the party leadership. Veteran pollster Ben Ephson today, Monday, April 19, 2021 has also shared his thoughts on Starr FM’s ‘Morning Starr’ programme. He warned the party against the internal crises ongoing and asserted that it was one of the main reasons the NDC lost in last year’s elections.
He added that per many, the NDC did so well in the last elections and the time for building is now so they capture the next elections. He warned against the changing of John Mahama. “The point is that you don’t change a winning team. If nominations open again for national executives, am sure if you are a voter, you will vote for those who brought you on the brink of victory.”
Many expect John Mahama to lead the NDC in election 2024 and ultimately snatch victory. A change might slow the chances of the party. What do you think?
