A member of the Defense and Interior Committee of Parliament, Peter Lanchene Toobu has chastised the Western Region Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah for being reckless with his statement that 28-year-old Josephine Panyin Mensah’s pregnancy and kidnapping were fake. According to him the fracas that has erupted in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis over the matter when police presented an official statement on their preliminary investigations must be blamed on the Regional Minister.
He expressed disappointment in the manner in which the Minster handle the matter, adding that “he acted as the PRO of the Police.” Mr. Lanchene Toobu who has substantial experience in policing, where he served [lately] as the Executive Secretary of former IGP David Asante Apeatu; felt that the Minister was too hasty in his announcement and thus caused so much harm than anticipated in the public.
He argued on Good Evening Ghana show, that the Regional Minister as head of the Regional Security Council is required to champion policy decisions and not to dabble in matters of security which ought to be handled by the state security agencies.
Mr. Lanchene Toobu stressed that public mistrust in the report filed by the police today is a result of the Minister’s hasty conclusions. He noted that the family and a section of Ghanaians who are in disagreement with the police report might think the Police are only acting to cover up for the “shame” the regional minister might have caused.
“Are the police acting to cover the disgrace of the Minister or they are presenting the fact?” he presented a probable reaction the public might have given to the report.
In his assessment of the current situation, Mr. Lanchene Toobu said; “he [Minister] had created a lot of negative impression in the mind of the people.”
He however prayed that the Police concludes their investigations in time and present some convincing report to settle the dust around the pregnancy and the alleged kidnapping. Mr. Lanchene stressed that it would be appropriate for the police to address the substantive matter of kidnapping.
