Former chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Herbert Mensah has added his bit to the ongoing issue involving the leader of Lighthouse Chapel, Bishop Dag Heward Mills. The businessman, in his usual calm demeanor dissected the matter from a very neutral standpoint even though it is known that he has a very close relationship with the Asantehene.
Touching on the matter, he urged Ghanaians to be circumspect in how they addressed issues. Much as he was not in agreement with the the content of the leaked audio, he also expressed his disappointment with the individual who conceived the idea of recording the religious leader and subsequently releasing it. To him, it only served one purpose, that is to trigger chaos.
Going back into Asante culture and history, he stated that the title of ‘Otumfuo’ or ‘Asantehene’ goes beyond just being a leader of a group of people but also a custodian of the culture and identity of Asanteman. He stressed that, that role as it is seen has that status because of what previous Kings of the Kingdom have done– a rich heritage.
He said how the monarch is viewed by his subjects is far different from any other . He added that unlike a president who has a limited number of years subject to an election, Otumfuo is Otumfuo and will continue to be until he passes on. As someone who he knows personally, he attested to a great number of developmental project he continues to embark on.
He expressed his great admiration for Bishop Heward Mills for coming out to apologize as that will help promote peace.
