Interior Ministry Slaps 14-hour Curfew On Bawku and Environs Effective Today

Following recent disturbances in the Bawku township, the Interior Minister, Hon. Ambrose Derry has imposed a dusk to dawn curfew on the Bawku Municipality and its environs effective today, Wednesday, November 24. The move by the ministry follows recommendation by the Upper East Regional Security Council after a high level security meeting was held today in attempt to prevent an already tensed situation from deteriorating further as sporadic gunshots were heard last night. The curfew period will span 14 hours beginning 4pm late afternoon until 6am the next morning. Aside the curfew, government has also placed a ban on all persons from the affected area from carrying arms, ammunition and any other offensive weapons.

In a statement, the interior Minister said the curfew is as result of threats to security in the affected communities and has therefore called called on the people to respect the order as anybody found flouting it will be dealt with in accordance with the law. Chiefs, opinion leaders, elders youth and people of the area have also been urged to exercise restrain in the face of challenges confronting them and to also adopt non violence means in resolving disputes aas government take steps to nib current security threats in the bud.
