If You Want To Represent Your People, Don't Accept To Be Deputy Speaker - Joe Wise Advised

Ghanaian based Think Tank, IMANI center for policy and education has reacted to Joe Wise's decision to act as both deputy speaker and a member of parliament at the same time.

According to IMANI Ghana's Kofi Bentil, Joe Wise can't have both ways as a player and a referee. He must choose one that he want to be because he cannot accept to be the deputy speaker and still want to represent his people.

"There’s a reason why if a member is appointed speaker he vacates his seat and there’s a runoff election to fill it. In the case of deputy speakers they vacate their seats temporarily when they ascend to the speakership" part of Kofi Bentil's statement read.

IMANI Ghana added that no one is forced to be deputy speaker, one can easily refuse it if it’s offered them. It also comes with considerable perks. In short, you cannot accept the privileges and refuse the duty.

"It is also most perverse that a member sits as speaker and referees all the debate and then proceeds to sit as a member to vote. That means he was never a referee in the first place" the statement concluded.
