Don’t repeat the 2008 mistake by Kufuor- Nana Addo advised

Pollster, Ben Ephson, is advising President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo not to repeat the mistake that led to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) failing to retain political power in the 2008 presidential and parliamentary election.

He said the decision by former President John Agyekum Kufuor to support one of the candidates’ Mr. Allan Kwadwo Kyerematen at the party’s presidential primary election, dealt a fatal blow to the NPP’s re-election bid.

It created disunity in the party and this was a mistake President Nana Akufo-Addo must avoid.

Speaking to a local radio station in Kumasi, the stronghold of the governing party, Mr. Ephson, who is the editor of the Dispatch Newspaper, said the decisions that were going to be made by President Nana Akufo-Addo, were going to determine the electoral chances of whoever, the party would elect to lead them to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

He cautioned that the governing party could pay a price – have their hope of breaking what has become known as the ‘eight-year jinx’ where none of the political parties has been able to hold on to political power after serving their first two four-year term running, dashed.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, he explained, should not do anything that would likely create division in the party – among its members and supporters.

Meanwhile, there has been firm assurance by the President that he was going to make sure that the process of picking the flagbearer to lead them to the 2024 general election was transparent and credible.

During his recent visits to the Ashanti and the Greater Accra Regions, he promised that he would not give his support to any of the people seeking to succeed him.

President Nana Akufo-Addo noted that this was how to stave off division and unite the party behind any candidate who would emerge winner at the party’s presidential primary election. The ground should be made level for every aspiring presidential candidate. He was emphatic that he was not going to show preference – throw his support for anybody.

Refreshing as this promise is, not many of his party members and supporters, are convinced.

There is widespread believe among the party supporters, particularly, in the Ashanti region that the establishment has a candidate it is supporting.

They point to recent nomination of people to serve in positions of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and say none of those known to be aligned with – supporters of Mr. Allan Kyerematen, the Trade and Industry Minister, who it is an open secret, would be in the race for the NPP’s presidential ticket, got nominated in the region.

This would be the fourth time Mr. Kyerematen would be making a shot at the flagbearer position. He was in the party’s presidential primary election in 2008, 2012 and 2016.
