Blame The Two Main Political Parties For The Mistrust In The Ghana Police Service-Prof Abotsi Jabs

Do you trust the Ghana Police Service?

What is the reason for your response?

Since time immemorial, the trust for state security agencies, especially the Ghana Police Service has dwindled even though the Police hierarchy has always introduced initiatives to change the narrative.

Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Professional Studies, Professor Kofi Abotsi says the Ghana Police Service continue to suffer mistrust deficit and the two main political parties in the country should be blamed for it.

Professor Kofi Abotsi made these remarks during a panel discussion on Newsfile on Joynews with host, Samson Lardi Anyenini and co-panelist, Honorable Dominic Ayine, member of Parliament for the Bolgatanga East Constituency today, November 6, 2021.

Professor was commenting on the latest arrest brouhaha regarding the Ghanaian Police Service and member of Parliament for the Madina Constituency, Francis Xavier Sosu.

He was of the view that, even though members of Parliament have some immunity, they can be arrested if it is established that they were not conducting any Parliamentary business per what they are accused of. He added that the immunity is effective only if there are conducting parliamentary business in or outside the House.

Professor Kofi Abotsi also reiterated that the Ghana Police Service continue to suffer mistrust and the two major political parties in the country are to be blamed.

” The Police suffers from a historical deficit of trust. There is a deficit of trust which both parties in government are to be blamed for. And usually when they are in opposition, they see the problem magnified but when I’m government, they do the same same things. They only see the problems when they are in opposition. So we have the situation where there is a deficit of trust in terms of the manipulation of the Police. And because of the manipulation of the Police, there is the sense that anytime the Police makes a move against a certain organ, there is a perception that the Executive is behind it” he said.
