Politicians from the Northern part of Ghana have come under intensive criticism in the past few days for failing to use their positions to influence development in their respective communities.
The while campaign was started by Onua TV’s Captain Smart who has been expressing his disappointment with politicians from the Northern parts of Ghana including former President John Dramani Mahama and current vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia.
An aspiring independent Presidential candidate in the 2020 Presidential elections has waded into the controversy and heavily criticized the vice-President. He has also called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo to as a matter urgency place a ban on all “kayayei” activities.
He made these assertions during a panel discussion on Northern Politicians on Onua Tv’s Onua Maakye show.
” It is very sad that over the years, these people have been so influential in the Ghanaian politics but when you go to their respective constituencies, there’s little to show for that influence. It is very shameful.
As for Bawumia, he’s a disgrace. With his authority, he cannot even call on Parliament to give special budgetary allocation to develop the Northern sector because it is obviously lacking in terms of development. I cannot wrap my head around this. Nana Addo should ban “kayayei” and provide alternative employment to the young men and women who move down south to engage in it. They should be moved back and given a decent livelihood”, he reiterated.
Hundreds of young men and women move to Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi from the North and engage in “kayayei” every year. A number of them come with the intent of getting some capital to start their own businesses or continue with their education but unfortunately, some do not succeed. Most of the ladies end up getting pregnant and their ambitions are truncated.
