The issue of the payment of salaries to the spouses of the President and the Vice President has attracted a lot of attention since it came up. Many have expressed concerns about the issue stating that the step contradicts with the provisions made by the 1992 Constitution and hence must be withdrawn as such.
The issue has faced stiff backlash as some concerned individuals have filed various lawsuits in order to get this decision nullified. There have also been other persons who have come out to defend the need for such a step to be taken.

The Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency, Hon. George Mireku Duker is in the bracket of persons who see nothing wrong with the aforementioned issue. Speaking on the issue during Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" programme, the Honourable Member said that first ladies impact the lives of many during the tenure of their husband; mentioning a few of the works done by former First ladies. He stated that the contributions made by the First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo is so great that the allowances given to her cannot be easily compared with.
He stressed that in fact the contributions of the First Lady to nation were 200 times more than what is being perceived to be her allowance. Hon. Duker named some of the projects - hospitals, baby-to-mother project and added that the costs of these projects alone is very massive. He added that the works of the First Lady are generating other resources to the nation. He stated that First ladies were pampered across the globe if one check.
He stated, "if we want to curb corruption, these are some of the things we should do". He explained that when individuals are well paid [motivated] it serves as a disincentive to veer into corruption arena.
