Budget Impasse: NPP Runs Away Again As Majority Group Boycotts 20 Member Resolution Committee

Tuesday, 7th November 2021

CitizenOne has gathered that the 20 member bipartisan committee tasked to resolve the impasse surrounding the 2022 budget failed to meet today as scheduled.

In an interview with Joynews' Paa Kawsi Parker Wilson, the deputy minority chief whip Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim said the meeting couldn't hold. He stated that the NPP side of the committee was not available for the all important meeting. The NDC legistor added that no message was given to that effect. He expressed regret over the conduct of the NPP side of the house.

"These are the very people who accuse us of obstructing Government business. Imagine such an important meeting scheduled by the chairman and not even the chairman himself is available for the meeting. What is more obstructive than this. We want the whole world to know what the NPP is', Hon Ahmed Ibrahim stated.

Leadership from both majority and minority caucuses in parliament formed a 20 member bipartisan committee to resolve the impasse surrounding the 2022 budget. This became necessary as the almighty budget was rejected by one side of parliament and later approved by the other side.

Each side of the house described the action of the other unconstitutional.

To ensure there is a working document for the country in the year ahead, the National Peace Council stepped in to make peace between the two factions. That intervention lead to eye formation of the committee chaired by the MP for Efutu and deputy majority leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo Markins.

The committee was scheduled to meet on Tuesday before the house resumes sitting. But the absence of the NPP side meant a different date will be scheduled fort the meeting.
