The prime minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, has announced fresh lockdown restrictions on the citizens of the country. The United Kingdom is estimated to have a population of 68 million people. The prime minister gave out this announcement on the evening of Monday, 4th January 2021.
The lockdown restriction was given out to bring the continuous increase in active cases to a halt. To the surprise of many, this is actually the third national lockdown which has been imposed in the European country. Boris Johnson said the newly imposed restriction will commence in just the next 24 hours. During these hours, citizens are to prepare themselves adequately for the lockdown. The fresh lockdown is expected to end in March.
The prime minister said, "We now have a new variant of the virus. It has been both frustrating and alarming to see the speed with which the new variant is spreading".
"As I speak to you tonight, our hospitals are under more pressure from Covid than at any time since the start of the pandemic".
