Adwoa Sarfo to be hauled before the Privileges Committee- Majority Leader

The leader of the majority side in parliament, Mr. Osei- Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has given the indication that the MP for Dome-Kwabenya constituency, Sarah Adwoa Sarfo, may be summoned before Parliament's privileges committee for absenting herself for so long without permission.

Speaking on Joy news, the majority leader noted that efforts to get his fellow parliamentarian to the house have proven futile, and that the Speaker of Parliament was due to make a pronouncement on her status last week, but due to circumstances, postponed it to this week.

"My information was that even last Tuesday, the Speaker was going to make a pronouncement on it in the house but I think the circumstances prevented him from so doing. I want to believe that perhaps before the House adjourns tomorrow or maybe next week when the House sits the Speaker may make the announcement by referring her conduct to the Privileges Committee before we adjourn. That’s the information that the Speaker gave to me", Mr. Osei Mensah was heard saying.

He added that although Honorable Adwoa Sarfo had written to Parliament requesting for an extension of her leave, the request was not granted. She took the leave regardless.

Many have wondered what might be caused the former deputy majority leader to stay away from parliament since December, with many attributing her absence to bad blood between her and the executives of the ruling NPP government. Indeed, she has been blamed for the difficulties the government went through in passing the E-Levy bill when they needed the numbers in parliament, and Honorable Mensah Bonsu touched on that.

"We have been limping I must admit. If she were here this hurdle would have been cleared long ago. We’ve been having conversations about her coming back and she’ll promise and renege on many occasions, but I think all is not right. How to go forward with it is the bigger burden" he explained.

Meanwhile, she is expected to be back from her sojourn this Friday, per her request for leave extension.
