The President of the land, His Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) introduced Planting for Food and Job when they came into power in 2017. Since then, they claim this program has been able to provide food security for the country. They sighted an example of how the Planting for Food and Job program saves the country when the global pandemic, Covid-19 took us by surprise.
But the major opposition political party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) believes that this 'Planting for Food and Job' by the NPP is a failure because foodstuffs in the market continue to go up day after day. If the NPP claim that there is an abundance of food in our market, then the prices of food commodities should be reduced but it is rather going up every day.
The Minister for Agriculture, Hon Owusu Afriyie Akoto in a press briefing today, Sunday 29th August 2021 states that to date, some 23.188 million seedlings consisting of cashew, coffee, coconut, oil palm, mango and rubber have been distributed. This according to him is President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's agenda to ensure food security in the country.
The projections are that all things being equal, the agriculture export earnings will grow by 8 times in the next decade. He stressed that their government will continue to prioritize agriculture, provide the necessary support and conducive policy environment to facilitate investment in the sector. Some Ghanaians after coming across this news briefing stated that the statistics he is talking about cannot be found on the ground.
They have been going to the market to buy foodstuffs and that food commodities continue to increase day by day. As for the 23.188 million seedlings he claims to be distributed, they are farmers but couldn't get their hands on these seedlings.
The Minister for Information, Hon Kodwo Oppong Nkrumah summarized this news briefing on his official Facebook page:
