Cape Coast High Court Today: Assin North MP vrs NPP Gurus, details

The Cape Coast High Court today 12th April, 2021 sat on the case involving the Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency as hinted on the last adjourned date.

As a reminder, the petition was filed by one Mr Michael Ankomah Nimfa of Assin Bereku, challenging the eligibility of Mr Quayson’s candidature as he is said to be holding dual citizenship contrary to the express provision of Article 94 (2) (a) of the 1992 constitution of Ghana.

That article states: “A person shall not be qualified to be a Member of Parliament if he – (a) owes allegiance to a country other than Ghana.”

He said Mr Quayson, started the process of renouncing his Canadian citizenship in 2019 but received his renunciation certificate in November 2020.

Lawyer Abraham Amaliba and Lawyer Frank Davies- Lead Counsels for both parties were in Court but there was no drama between unlike the last adjourned date.

According to Golden Star FM reporter (Mozzey) three main issues were set down for trial with the Judge ordering parties to address him on the three issues set down for trial.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Gurus in Court today to support their member from Assin Beraku who is challenging the Assin North MP were the Regional Chairman, Regional Secretary, Transport Minister and others whilst the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was represented by their Regional Communication Officer.

The Case was subsequently adjourned to 12th May 2021 to enable Counsels to address the Court on the three issues set down for trial. After the addresses, the judge will then set a date for Judgement of the substantive case.
