Yesterday, MP for North Tongue, Okudzeto Ablakwa once again presented some analysis regarding President Akufo-Addo’s expensive plane charter to Serbia. This conversation came up today, Wednesday, October 13, 2021 on TV3’s New Day newspaper discussion. Alhassan Suhuyini and Okoe Boye joined Johnnie Hughes on the show.
Alhassan Suhuyini tried to bring up the issue and queried why the president still insists on living a luxurious life despite the deplorable plight of most Ghanaians. His comments were however debunked by Okoe Boye, former Deputy Minister of Health. According to Okoe Boye, there are many instances of former president John Mahama chartering flights and yet the NDC have been quiet about it. Okoe Boye quoted for instance a recent trip that John Mahama took to the Volta Region.
According to Okoe Boye, John Mahama couldn’t even take this simple trip via a land cruiser and rather chose a plane. He explained that this was a trip that even a Kia Picanto could have undertaken. According to Okoe Boye, John Mahama takes the same salary as President Akufo-Addo. He added that the car that John Mahama uses is changed every 4 years. In further explaining he maintained that life is comfortable for John Mahama because of the government’s decision to sponsor him.
Okoe Boye noted that if a former president was enjoying such privileges, then why could a sitting president do same. He charged on the NDC to bring out their findings on the cost of chartered trips that John Mahama took. Apparently, Alhassan Suhuyini who had started the debate couldn’t bring up those figures. At best, Suhuyini, MP for Tamale north could only remember the cost of charters for President Akufo-Addo.
The point however remains as to whether government communicators will be bold enough to criticize their leaders. From the side of the NPP and NDC it is clear that they are all trained to accept everything that their leaders do.
