Certainly, we have all heard and know about the Ghana Police Service. We are equally aware of the various services they provide.
Again, we are aware that the Ghana Police Service is only one unit of the security agencies in Ghana. Yes, apart from the Police Service, we have the Military, Custom, Immigration, Prison Officers etc.
And just like the Police Service, all other security agencies have their unique security role they play in Ghana. Apart from these facts we know in the open, there are some facts about these security agencies that always escape your eyes and knowledge.
But then, our focus today, will be on the Police Service and others will follow later. We shall take and look at some hidden facts about the Police Service that you only get to know if you are a member of the Police Service.
Just like any other organization, the Police Service is made up of hierarchical structure. We have those from the lower rank to the highest rank.
How are these ranks structured? Who follows who? And how do you identify them when you see them on the street?
The first from the bottom of the rank is the CONSTABLE.
The Police constables are those fresh officers who after going through the police training, are posted on security duties. The Constables have only the Police badge on their crest.
Second on the list are the LANCE-CORPORALS (One chevron worn on both sleeves of their crest)
The next after the Lance-Corporal is Corporal ( Two chevrons worn on both sleeves of their Crest)
The Corporal is followed be a Sergeant (Three chevrons worn on both sleeves of their crest)
Sergeant is followed by District Sergeant-Major (The Star surrounded by laurel leaves in a form of a metal badge worn on the left sleeve)
The District Sergeant-Major is followed by Regional Sergeant-Major (The Ghana Coat of Arms in the form of a metal badge worn on both sleeves)
Regional Sergeant-Major is followed by Inspector (Three white metal bars each mounted with the Star in the centre)
Inspector is followed by Chief Inspector ( Four white metal bars each mounted with the Black Star in the centre)
Cadet Officers
Chief Inspector is followed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (Two Stars)
Assistant Superintendent of Police is followed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Three Stars)
Deputy Superintendent of Police is followed by Superintendent of Police ( Two eagles facing each other)
Superintendent of Police is followed by Chief Superintendent of Police ( Two Eagles facing each other surmounted by one Star)
Chief Superintendent of Police is followed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (The Star surrounded by laurel leaves)
Assistant Commissioner of Police is followed by Deputy Commissioner of Police ( The Star surrounded by laurel leaves surmounted by one Star)
Deputy Commissioner of Police is followed by Commissioner of Police ( The Star surrounded by laurel leaves surmounted by two Stars)
Commissioner of Police is followed by Inspector General of Police (The Star surrounded by laurel leaves surmounted by two eagles facing each other and one Star)
