Government may not be able to pay salaries within the next 3months- Speaker Bagbin Reveals

The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin in the closing stages of parliamentary sitting on Thursday 24 February, made a revelation to the House about the risk of the government not being able to pay salaries within the next three (3) months if something drastic doesn’t happen. According to the Speaker, information at his disposal indicates that the government may not be able to pay salaries in the coming months.

The Speaker in making the disclosure hastened to add that, he did not share the information to discourage the parliamentary select committees from doing their work. Rather, to urge the house about the need to take action.

In the view of Speaker Bagbin, the House must show leadership to avert the looming risk. He, therefore, implored the House that there is the need to do a lot of things.

The Speaker went ahead to adjourn the sitting of the House to Friday, February 25, 2022.

Though it is unclear the specific actions Parliament would take towards averting the situation, it is believed that the House will be taking actions that would help the government to raise revenue to meet the financial obligations and commitments of the state. This comes after Mr. Ken Ofori-Attah, the Minister for Finance revealed that the reality of the nation is that there is no money
