The Minority Leader in Ghana's eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Honorable Haruna Iddrisu has said that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which constitutes the minority Caucus in Parliament would not relent in their bid to kick against all forms of taxes purported to be levied on poor Ghanaians.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament during Friday's (December 17, 2021) sitting, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu bemoaned government's insensitivity towards the plight of the Ghanaian people and had said that they in the Minority remain resolute and vehemently opposed to that which the government remains adamant to withdraw despite its regressive and oppressive nature.
Haruna Iddrisu noted that they (NDC as the Minority in Parliament) remain resolute and shall continue to employ every means democratic and lawful to convict and challenge the government to abandon the infamous insensitive, regressive and obnoxious Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy). He said that absolutely nothing can be more progressive than the government considering the economic challenges of the ordinary Ghanaian before levying taxes on them.
"We remain vehemently opposed to that which the government remains adamant to withdraw, the Killer E-Levy of 1.75, which undoubtedly will subject the ordinary Ghanaian to financial pressure and further thwart the our nation's ease of doing business and cripple the digitalization drive. We stand opposed to this levy," Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has said.
"And that is why we in the minority remain committed to exploring lawful and democratic means of getting the government abandon this insensitive, obnoxious and regressive tax. Absolutely nothing can be more Ghanaian progressive at this stage than a demand that government considers the economic challenges of the ordinary Ghanaian in rolling out taxes," he added.
The Speaker of Parliament, Right Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin is solidly behind the stand of the Minority as he has already made it clear that his outfit will not do anything to frustrate government business, but he equally will not do anything against the interest and sovereign will of the good people of Ghana by acting as an errand boy for the Executive.
