I Support Osei Kyei Mensah This Time – Kwesi Pratt Sends Simple Message To Alban Bagbin

Yesterday in Parliament there were hot exchanges between the majority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah and Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament. This was after parliament was presented with a petition by Mahama Ayariga on behalf of Dr. Duffour and Kofi Amoabeng to probe the Bank of Ghana over the collapse of UT Bank.

The petition was received by the Speaker, Alban Bagbin. The Majority Leader tried to object to this, something which led to a back and forth and the popular, “I am number 3 in the country”. The Speaker reminded Osei Kyei that he was the Majority leader and he, Alban was number 3 so cannot dictate to him.

On ‘Good Morning Ghana’, today, Wednesday, March 24, 2021, Kwesi Pratt shared his thoughts and expressed worry on the separation of powers being maligned. “I am not so sure when a matter is pending before court, Parliament can discuss it. I have come to the conclusion that some of these banks were not treated fairly by the Bank of Ghana but am worried we are running into a time when decisions of the court are running into that of Parliament.

So to some extent I think the Majority Leader was right in raising the Red flags. What will happen if the court takes a certain decision that runs contrary to that of what Parliament decides. Alban Bagbin needs to reconsider. This can harm the Separation of powers and bring conflicts” Kwesi queried.

Was Alban Bagbin right in accepting the petition? Was Osei Kyei Mensah right in objecting to the petition? Share your thoughts.
